Milton White Interviews (May 1972, Feb 1973, Jan 1975, and Feb 1975)

This series of interviews with Princeton Professor of Physics and Director of the Princeton-Pennsylvania Accelerator Laboratory, Milton White, discuss Whites's experiences that led him to physics, his doctoral research, his time as a Professor of Physics at Princeton University, his experiences as Director of the Princeton-Pennsylvania Accelerator Laboratory, and his work on the atomic bomb.

The first interview with Milton White, conducted by Charles Weiner in May 1972, discusses White's background and college experiences that led him to a career in physics. He also discusses working on the cyclotron at the University of California - Berkeley for his doctoral thesis. The second interview, conducted February 1973, picks up where the last ended. White begins by discussing finishing up his doctoral thesis, his post-graduation options, and ultimately getting a job at Princeton University. He talks about constructing Princeton's first cyclotron, the research they conducted with Princeton's cyclotron, and teaching physics at Princeton. The third interview, conducted in January 1975, begins with a discussion of White's experiences in Cambridge where he worked at MIT's Radiation Laboratory during WWII. It also briefly discusses White's work at Los Alamos, his engagement with atomic bomb research, and his reactions to the dropping of the atomic bombs on Japan. This third interview also touches on Princeton's plans for constructing a synchrotron. The fourth and final interview, conducted in February 1975, focuses on the Princeton-Pennsylvania Accelerator Laboratory and White's role in starting and directing the project.
