Plasma Physics Lab and the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor, 1989

This short promotional film produced by Princeton describes the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory and the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR). The video explains that this fusion research program is funded by the Department of Energy (DoE) for the purpose of creating an alternative energy source that is more sustainable than fossil fuels. At the time of publication, the DoE had invested more than $300 million into the PPPL. The video provides footage of the interior of PPPL along with the machinery and scientists at work. It is clear that PPPL is one of the leading fusion research labs in the US with hundreds of leading plasma scientists and engineers studying and contributing here. At this time, PPPL had more than 800 employees. While the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor is the focus of research at PPPL, a few of the smaller projects are soft x ray lasers, plasma etching of electronics, and studies of the solar system’s magnetic fields.
